How Long Is Eyelid Lift Recovery?

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) can renew our youthful appearance and make us look healthier, well-rested, and happier. Many men and women opt to have the procedure done in time for the holidays when they’ll be surrounded by friends and family they rarely get to see. With a little preparation and knowledge beforehand, it’s possible to facilitate a quick, easy recovery without complications.

Eyelid lifts are typically done on an outpatient basis in our accredited surgical center. Upper eyelid surgery can be performed under local anesthetic and light intravenous sedation. Lower eyelid surgery may require general anesthesia that can leave you feeling groggy up to 48-hours afterward. Either way, you’ll need someone to drive you home the day of your surgery.

In the days following surgery, you can expect some redness, swelling, dryness, blurred vision, and sensitivity to light. Dr. Harris will provide you with medical-grade lubrication to address many of these symptoms. Cold compresses and keeping your head elevated will minimize potential bruising and swelling.

Stitches will be removed 2-7 days after your eyelid lift. Most patients can start to incorporate non-strenuous activities into their routine at this time including work. As swelling subsides, your fresh, new eyes will begin to emerge.

Activities that could strain or dry the eyes should be avoided for at least 1-week. This includes reading, watching television, and wearing contacts. Make sure your eyes get plenty of rest. The most important thing you can do is listen to your body. If your eyes become tired or tear-up take a break. Otherwise, you could risk prolonging the healing process.

It can take several weeks for your eyes to be fully recovered from surgery. Take it slow and minimize activities that increase blood flow to the eyes. Dark sunglasses are also a good idea to prevent damage from sun or wind. In most cases, blepharoplasty is a one-time procedure that lasts a lifetime. Most patients find the several weeks of recovery to be well worth the lasting effects.

During your in-person consultation, Dr. Brady Harris will talk to you in-depth about what you can expect before, during, and after your eyelid lift surgery.
